DECO DIVA: This wonderful French Bakelite brooch of American entertainer, Josephine Baker, is made of Galalith - one of the oldest plastics. Galalith, invented in 1897, has a milk base, but looks and feels like Bakelite. Josephine Baker went to Paris in the 1920’s and with her exotic looks and sensational performance style became a beloved Paris icon. Her name has become synonymous with Art Deco. She is lightly carved and hand painted in red, black and white over a translucent root beer base. The heat set pin back with safety lock is original. Condition: Good. The paint is in excellent condition. There is an inclusion above her right eye near the hairline, which must be original to the piece. When you are wearing the pin it looks wonderful. 2 2/8" high, 1 5/8"wide.
