Bakelite & Other Plastic Jewelry:BB058

WINGS OF GOLD ( Lea Stein Jewelry Pin ): Striking and bold, this Lea Stein Cicada Pin features wings embedded with chips of iridescent gold in iridescent marbleized red. (Much more lovely than photos. Couldn’t catch the iridescence.) The cicada’s head and shell are done in black and copper. This large new design has become an instant classic. It looks surprising pinned to the back of a jacket! In France in the early 1950’s, Lea Stein and her chemist husband created a process for manufacturing a unique cellulose acetate material. Unlike Bakelite or celluloid, Lea Stein plastics are remarkable for the various patterns and effects that are cast into the material. Then these wonderful lightweight plastics are constructed into stylish, wittily designed pins. The result is magical. After more than a decade of being out of production, in the late 1990’s Lea Stein pins went back into production in France. This fanciful insect pin has a safety clasp and a V-shaped metal pin back that reads "Lea Stein", "Paris". Condition: New. Size: 3 1/2" long, 1 3/8" wide, 1/4" deep.
