VINTAGE FLOWER GARDEN (Vintage Bakelite Bracelet): No serious Bakelite collection is complete without at least one wonderful example of reverse-carved Bakelite. This fine bangle is under carved and painted by hand. The result: a three-dimensional flower garden so lifelike it is hard to believe that they are not actually real flowers embedded inside. Originally intended to imitate crystal, the clear cast has over the years turned to the mellow amber color referred to as "applejuice". The flowers are painted blue from the back side, but appear green thru the yellow tint. Transparent casts were 15% to 20% more expensive than the opaque raw materials and with the added labor of both carving and coloring the piece, reverse-carved jewelry found itself at the high end of the ‘30’s price spectrum. (A similar bangle is pictured on page 86 of The Bakelite Jewelry Book by Davidov & Dawes.) Highly prized - buy it when you see it! Condition: Excellent. Tiny bit of paint loss not visible amidst the intricate design. Size: 3/4" wide, 1/4" walls, 2 1/2" inner dimension.
