THE TOOTHACHE TWINS - OLD & NEW ( Vienna Bronze Pug Dogs ): Are they sad looking, or what? These two darling Vienna Bronze Pugs are suffering from their toothaches, but of equal interest - one pug is old and the other fairly new. They allow you to see the differences. In the 19th Century the Viennese made very realistic bronze animals. In the early 20th Century they started giving some human characteristics - with pugs a big favorite. The early 20th Century pugs - such as the one here on the left - had great detail in the molding and were either left bronze colored (such as this one) or lightly painted. They seldom carried hallmarks. Old Vienna Bronze pugs in good condition are highly prized and highly priced. The pug on the right is typical of those of the last 10 years or so - not as finely molded, but brightly painted with appealing facial expressions. This one carries the Petri Bronzen hallmark of Vienna. I love them both! Condition: Both excellent. Size: Old one - 1" high, 7/8" long. New - 1 1/8" high, 3/4" long.
