CHECK MATE! ( Vienna Bronze Pug Dogs ): This is a wonderful example of the charming Vienna Bronze Pugs playing human games - in this case chess. You can see why they made their owners smile. Nineteenth Century Vienna Bronzes tended to be very realistic. They started taking on human characteristics in the early 20th Century and became beloved collector's items all over the world. This one is a very fine casting made by the Bergmann Bronze Factory of Vienna. Franz Bergmann was one of the first and most famous creators of Vienna Bronzes. This one is probably from the early 20th Century. It is not painted with the newer acrylic paint used more recently and bears the old Bergmann Trademark and "Austria" stamped on the bottom. Condition: Very good - just enough signs of wear to show it is old and was loved. 1 7/8" high, 2 3/4" long, 1 9/16" wide.
