MINNESOTA FATS vs. FAST EDDIE ( Vintage Vienna Bronze Pug Dogs ): These Vienna Bronze Billiard Playing Pugs may not be in that league, but they do play a cool game. The Viennese started humanizing their bronze miniatures in the early 20th Century and pugs were a natural choice, since – as we all know – they are close to human (only better). They were cast playing all types of games, with billiards being one of the favorites. This duo, with their detailed molding and textured table, is made even more special because it was cast by the Franz Bergmann foundry, the most famous Vienna Bronze artist family. Franz the elder established his foundry in 1860 and it was continued by his son, Franz Xaver Bergmann. This piece bears their hallmark, a “B” inside an urn, along with the words “AUSTRIA” and “GESHUTZT”, which means “protected” (i.e. copyright or patented). Condition: Excellent for age. Some paint wear from billiard balls and table. After all they’ve probably been playing for around 75 years! Size: 3 1/2” wide, 1 3/4” high, 2” deep. Each pug is 1 5/8” tall.
