ANTIQUE BLACK VIENNA BRONZE PUG: Though it’s impossible to precisely date Vienna Bronze Pugs, those representing humans in various activities were not made until the early 20th century. Prior to that all Vienna Bronze animals were very realistic. The age of this pug can be judged not only by it being realistic, but also by the painting style, the signs of wear and the greenish patina that occurs with time even on painted bronzes. There are 2 other things that make this pug unusual - the fact that he is black (the great majority are brown) and the details in the casting. You can see every hair on his body, not seen on newer and lower quality ones. I took a side-lighted photo from the top to show this. He is definitely solid bronze - being quite heavy, with the bronze visible where there is wear on the bottom of his feet and the small area just above his right ear seen on the back view. Condition: Very good for his age. 1 7/8" tall, 2 1/2".
