BABY’S FIRST TRICYCLE ( Vintage Vienna Bronze Pug Dog ): I know most people think pug owners who think of their pugs as their kids have a screw loose, but this cute little pug on a tricycle shows that these feelings are hardly new. Almost all of the “humanized” Vienna Bronze pugs – so popular for close to 100 years – are made from molds, or based on molds from the early 20th Century. Even earlier, the famous 18th Century English painter and social satirist, William Hogarth – owner of several pugs (Trump being the most famous) – started using pugs as quasi-human actors in social situations as early as 1730. So I don’t feel so badly that I bought this pug in the late 80’s with those feelings in mind. Though he appears, based on the bright red of the tricycle, to have been decorated with the newer acrylic paints, his molding is more detailed than that found in the newer pugs. Condition: Excellent. Size: 1 1/2” high, 1 1/2” long, 5/8” deep.
