Pug Figurines: PM014 A & B

PERKY PUG PAIR ( Vintage Metal Pug Dogs ): I purchased these 2 pugs several years ago at a small antique show in one of the German heritage towns in our area. I liked their antique appearance and relatively fine molding with the hair of the coat much like that seen in the old Vienna Bronzes. They were slip cast and most likely made of “white metal” (an alloy of lead & tin). The shiny silver metal can be seen on the base. My guess is that they were made in the 1930’s. Even the artisans making the famous Vienna Bronze figurines were forced to use cheaper metals, such as these, during the great depression due to the relative expense of the copper required to make bronze (an alloy of copper & tin). These pugs may have been painted brown initially, but now give the appearance of black pugs – for you black pug fanciers looking for older pug figurines.

Condition: Good. The molding is excellent but with some small scraped areas on one of the pugs. If they were once brown, most of the brown paint has been rubbed off.
Size: Each is 1 5/8” high, 1 1/2” long, 3/4” wide.
