A TOAST TO ALL PUGS! ( Vintage German Pug Beer Stein ): What a hoot! How often have you seen a pug (Mops) as a beer stein? And wearing glasses, yet? This pug is wonderfully molded and decorated. Most of his coat is a rich mahogany color. He is a fully functional stein, if you care to use him for a cool one, but most pug or stein collectors will probably set him on a shelf to be much admired. You probably wonder what it says on his tummy: “Mops was kannst du nützen wenn du nicht gerollt bist.” My translation was: “You can’t utilize this Pug if you aren’t rolled.” My literate German friend had a good laugh at that. He tells me in the 19th Century salted herring, a common North Sea catch, was a popular treatment for a hangover. Salted herring was rolled, or collared, and this was thought to look like a Pug – thus called “Rollmops”. A literal translation would be: “Pug, how can you help if you are not rolled.” A more meaningful translation would be: “If you drink too much you will not need the help of a Pug, but of a rolled herring.” (How do you like that for research?) He has “101.” on his back. Condition: Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs. Size: 8” high, 4” wide, 6 1/4” deep including handle.
