RARE TERRA COTTA PUG DOG: I enjoy looking at the handful of pug figurines found at most "high end" antique shows. Often there are 1 or 2 large, clay-colored pugs that aren’t particularly attractive and have several chips and cracks. Out of curiosity I ask the price - $3000!!! I ask why? "It’s terra cotta!" (accompanied by a look that says "How can you be so ignorant?"). I decided I shouldn’t stay ignorant during all 30 years of collecting. Terra Cotta (baked earth) is unglazed, earth colored, hard baked clay. 19th Century terra cotta pugs are so expensive because so few remain. And those that do generally have multiple defects because of the relatively soft material. This good looking male pug has survived over 100 years in relatively good health. You can see some of the thin surface is missing around the tip of the tail and on his right rear leg, otherwise there are only a few insignificant dings. Intact red painted collar and mouth. Black glass eyes in perfect condition. The only reason this pug is relatively affordable is that he is relatively small: 3 7/8" high, 4" long, 2 1/4" wide. Posed to display. DON’T PASS UP THIS RARE PUG!
