I DIDN’T DO IT! ( Vintage Japanese Hotta Yu Shoten & Co. Porcelain Pug Dog ): When I purchased this pug with the very expressive face, I thought it was from the “Occupied Japan” period because the hallmark is in English. Japan has been producing high quality porcelain for almost as long as China, so porcelain products were a natural for them to continue to make and sell to America following WWII. Most of those post-WWII companies were short lived and did not make expensive items, so I was very surprised when I found the hallmark this pug bears was in one of my hallmark research books (a flower with an “H” in the center surrounded by “Hand Painted, Japan”). He was made by the Hotta Yu Shoten & Co. (The word “Shoten” indicates it is a shop selling products only from it own kiln.) I found various pieces of China made by them on the internet and it appears to be of medium quality with most of it made during the 1920’s & ‘30’s, obviously for export. This darling pug with the “Oh dear, you caught me!” look on his face is nicely molded and decorated, sporting a red collar, of nice size and posed to display. A rare and wonderful addition to your pug collection.
Condition: Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs.
Size: 4 3/4" high, 4” long, 2, 2 1/2" deep.
