MARVELOUS MAJOLICA ( Antique Majolica Porcelain Pug Ashtray & Match Holder ): I always love to look at the brightly colored, fanciful Majolica creations of all types. Once in a great while I find a pug, but most are too pricey for my personal collection, much less for re-sale. This wonderful little masterpiece was an exception due to a flaw – almost too tiny to notice. Basically an ashtray - it consists of a handsome pug wearing a cocky pink hat, a large pink water lily match-holder perched on a large leaf and a hollow tree trunk doubling as a cigarette holder and match-striker – all overlooking a shell shaped aqua pool as the ashtray. The pool is decorated with a vine and leaves extending from the water lily. The piece is truly sublime! I have no idea as to its origin except it is probably “Continental” based on the type of hat. There are numbers impressed in the base “6619” & “26”, but no hallmark. Condition: Very good. There is an almost invisible crack part way around the base of the tree trunk and a small chip, not visible from the outside, in the back edge of the base. Both shown in photos. I have checked it with a “black light” and there are no signs of repairs or re-decorations. Size: Total height 4 ¾”, width 5 ¾”, depth 4 ½”. Pug 3 ¼” tall, water lily blossom 1 ¼” high, tree trunk 1 ¼” high. Ashtray 5 ¾” wide, 3” deep, 1” high at front – 1 ½” at back. I doubt very much if you will ever see another of these. The low price reflects the minor defects.
