TEARS OF THE VIRGIN MARY ( Victorian Ivory Jewelry Earrings ): These hand carved Lilly-of-the-Valley Victorian Ivory Earrings (c. 1840 - 1880) are a lovely example of the Victorian Language of Flowers. Captured with life-like details, every little bell-shaped leaf and flower tells us that these are the work of a master carver. The tiny twisted rope border is a delicate finishing touch. This pair of mirror image floral earrings convey the message "return to happiness" and "you have made my life complete". Sometimes referred to as "the tears of the Virgin Mary", these delicate blossoms are one of the early signs that spring has returned and life begins anew. The original gold-filled shepherd’s hook ear wires remain. These are really miniature works of art. Condition: Excellent. Beautiful soft patina to the Ivory. One tiny fleabite at edge of earring on the right. Not noticeable in actual size. Size: 1 1/2" long, 5/8" wide, 3/8" deep.
