IVORY HUNTER AND COMPANIONS ( Victorian Jewelry Ivory Brooch ): I have been fortunate to find a superb Victorian (c. 1840-1850) Ivory Brooch that is remarkable in quality. This small masterpiece of carving is a stunning example of the Antique Ivory Brooches that were a specialty of German carvers. Hunting scenes and rural idylls with browsing stags were extremely popular themes, though few were as complex as this brooch. Carved from a single piece of Ivory, a hunter with his hawk and dog stands in a forest setting. The central plaque is enclosed in a brown stained branch frame with an elaborate surround of acorns and oak leaves. Oaks, their leaves and acorns represent power or victory. The Ivory has a warm rich vanilla patina. There is a C clasp pin back. Grand beyond belief and rich in symbolism, this hunting themed brooch is outstanding in its entirety. Definitely a Victorian collector’s piece. Condition: Excellent. It is Ivory, not bone. There is one tiny loss to the bottom right branch. Not noticeable. Size: 2 1/2” high, 2” wide.
