Victorian Jewelry: IV030

THE POETRY OF FLOWERS ( Victorian Jewelry Antique Ivory Locket ): “Flowers have their language. Theirs is an oratory that speaks in perfumed silence.” (Mrs. M.L. Rayne, 1882) The abundance of blossoms and foliage which trailed over jewelry during the peak of Victorian Romanticism was in part a result of a fashionable interest in the language of flowers. Ivory was an ideal medium for expressing these floral messages. An Ivory locket such as this captivating French piece could be given as a token of love or sorrow. (A rose given out of affection meant love. If its image appeared on a memorial piece, it conveyed sorrow.) The raised floral motif has been carved separately and then fastened by means of tiny pegs to the smooth locket front. (You can see the pegs from the inside.) The large bale and hook are just lovely – the overall ivory grain and patina are rich and warm. Ivory is flattering to all skin tones and all ages. This locket opens to the right and retains its original picture covers and rims. It would look outstanding on a ribbon, chain or ivory beads. A true Victorian Treasure no collector or flower lover should be without. “Flowers are the alphabet of Angels, whereby they write on hills and fields mysterious truths.” (A Correct Dictionary of Flowers”, mid-19th Century) Condition: Excellent. Hinge is tight and locket closes by means of a tiny peg. No breaks or cracks. Size: Locket with bale 2 3/4” long, 1 1/2” wide, 5/8” deep with raised rose spray.
