IVORY GARDEN OF LOVE ( Victorian Ivory Jewelry Locket ): Victorian Romanticism found its perfect expression in carved ivory botanical motifs. The quality of this Antique Floral Ivory Locket is so remarkable that it seems like a miracle that it has survived. (c. 1880) Extravagantly hand carved with a central full bloom rose and carnation, surrounded by cascades of forget-me-nots, this locket is full of Victorian romantic symbolism. In the “language of flowers” a single rose in full bloom signifies “I love you, I love you still”, the carnation “bonds of love” and the forget-me-nots were a reminder of “true love and memories”. The flowers, stems and leaves are so densely carved that you will gaze on it with amazement. The rose face plate swings open to reveal a locket. The original liner and cover are still intact. The face plate stays in place nicely – I have had the original gold pin/peg replaced with a new one to prevent it from swinging open with movement. The ivory has a warm patina and the locket retains its large carved ivory bale. Feminine and delicate, this locket displays the skill and artistry of a master carver. (Probably French) It is perfection! Condition: Excellent. No breaks or loss. Size: 3” long from the top of the bale, locket is 2 1/8” high, 1 3/4” wide, 7/8” deep. The inside oval picture frame is 1” high, 3/4” wide.
