Victorian Jewelry: IVJ043

THE WINGS OF LOVE ( Victorian Ivory Jewelry Cupid Brooch ): This is one of the most captivating Victorian Ivory pieces I have had the pleasure of offering. A marvel of the hand carver’s art, this brooch depicts the beautiful youth, Cupid. (Note that he is not a baby cherub in this carving.) This exquisite charmer probably dates from the mid-Victorian period – c. 1860-80. Cupid, the god of Love, was the son of Venus, frequently seen attending her. His dainty feathered wings and his expression display such serenity that the viewer is spellbound by this angelic manifestation of love. The cupid motif has been embellished by the carver with the addition of 2 beautifully rendered rose blossoms – another symbol associated with love. A deeply carved brooch with a lovely light patina that only time can apply. The Ivory grain is best seen on the cheek and nose, but the photos do not capture it. The back retains its original C clasp pin back. This radiant and superb brooch is as wearable today as it was over a century ago. Ivory delights the eye and looks wonderful on any color or texture. A masterpiece for you to own. Condition: Excellent. No chips on wings (a minor miracle on delicate carvings such as this). Size: 2 1/4” wide, 2” high, 3/4” deep.
