THE AGE OF INNOCENCE ( Edwardian Ivory Portrait Miniature / Pendant ): Captured for all time, this innocent young beauty gazes out at us with eyes full of wisdom (1918). Purchased from the Sanger estate, this portrait of sweet femininity is identified as Lillian Sanger, Age 9 of Washington, D.C., daughter of the Assistant Secretary of War 1901-1903. Painted at Santa Barbara, CA, by Ernest Lloyd on July 6, 1918. The portrait is signed “E. Lloyd” on the lower right edge. Painted in oil on Ivory, the blue hair bows and white Edwardian dress are beautiful childhood indicators. The face is where a true artist is revealed and every feature of Lillian’s expression is rendered in perfect life-like precision. Almost magical in presence and color, this is an image that haunts you and makes you long to know her secrets. The setting is gold plated with a border of small flowers. This hand painted portrait miniature comes in its original travel case. The inside of the case, lined with velvet and satin, is in fine shape, but the leather exterior of the covered wooden case has become brittle and parts are broken off. There is a tiny clasp on the front and a picture stand on the back. These miniatures were placed in traveling cases and carried by relations when away from home. A captivating portrait of enduring appeal. Condition: Portrait is Excellent. Case, though worn, is part of the history of the piece. Size: Portrait is 3 1/8” high, 2 1/2” wide, 1/4” deep. Case is 4 7/8” high, 3 1/2” wide, 3/4” deep.
